Has your bus ever come to New Jersey? I'd love to see that, especially if you support family farms which have so much diminished over the years. NJ, the "Garden State", has become the "Better Homes and Gardens State". Too many farms and orchards have been lost to construction companies who set up alot of those big houses which most people can't afford and which drive up the taxes which have been driving people out of NJ. Why should we of "the Garden State" have to buy strawberries in our supermarkets which are transported from CALIFORNIA?? We grow the BEST strawberries here and yet these have disappeared from local supermarkets over the past several years. Would someone care to explain how it is "greener" to transport strawberries all the way from CA when we can and do grow them here? It seems that our Agricultural Department in the "Soprano State" just doesn't do enough to maintain and encourage local produce.

Amen, Brother. Supporting local, organic agriculture is just about the best thing around. Those California berries are covered with preservatives to keep them looking Brand Spankin' New for the trip across the USA and end up leaving my mouth with an allergic reaction. See if you can get involved and help your neighbors and friends get involved with Community Supported Agriculture groups (CSAs) that help support not only local farming businesses but also putting delicious, locally grown food into your belly. And BE SURE to let our confused Agricultural Department know that you're ticked. Let them know the wrath of TC. Years ago I took the Green Tortoise from Seattle to San Francisco. It was the best trip of my life. We stopped for a sauna at Cow Creek in Oregon and were fed the most amazing meal prepared outdoors. There was salmon, corn, potatoes, salad and they whipped the cream for the raspberry cake with a battery operated blender. For the night ride we all lay down like sardines in a can and had a beautiful ride on to SF to the music of favourite musicians from the 60s and 70s.

Ahhh Angus, you bring up a good point. Obviously we do, in fact, have a carbon footprint in burning waste vegetable oil. However, because we are recycling the vegetable oil and preventing it from being dumped somewhere (burning "waste"), technically what we are burning is carbon neutral. In other words, we're not creating any new fuel to be burned; we're burning fuel that someone else created and intended to dispose of. Either way, it's a good question. As far as balancing the carbon footprint we create otherwise, we do a number of alternative activities like education programs for corporations and local people when we're in each city, education programs for ourselves throughout the country at facilities like Waste Management's Single Stream Recycling plant in Phoenix, Arizona, and action as conscious consumers when we're on the bus--buying local, organic, and whole foods. We even composted our solid food waste in a worm bin until Louisiana, when the worms got cooked in one of the bays of the bus....woops...
