Carter & Olivia Ries Every Day Should Be Earth-Day

May 9, 2012 02:41 pm

Each year cities across the country and even overseas gear up to cerebrate Earth-Day.  Here in the greater Atlanta area, we are no different.  Each year Earth-Day is stretched out to what becomes Earth-Week and even Earth-Month as organizations attempt to engage their local community to get involved and use t... Chantra, Thank you so much for your kind comments. It means the world to us to know there are so many people all over the country who think the way we do about these issues. You bring up a great point and one that we hear at almost every speaking engagement we do. There are more and more alternatives which are environmentally friendly which allow us as consumers to easily stop up to over 90% of our current consumption of single use plastic bags. We have partnered with two agencies who offer alternatives to the current plastic bags you get in every grocery store and convenience store. The first company is Chico Bags out of California (http://www.chicobag.com/p-41-chicobag-vita-repete.aspx) and they offer a great rePET product which is made from recycled water bottles. It is a great way to help reduce the amount of plastic bottles we produce each year. The slight drawback is that the product is still made of plastic. The good side to their bags is that they last a really long time. they are washable and by using them, you are not using the disposable single use bags. They also offer an active repurposing and recycling program for all brands and types of reusable bags. ChicoBag doesn't want ANY reusable bag to be left in a dark closet or sent to a landfill. Send them all of your tired masses of reusable bags, functional or not. They will distribute them to fixed and low income families ready to start a reusable bag habit or recycle them into new useful products through The Grateful Thread program. The other company we work with is Project GreenBag (http://www.projectgreenbag.com/) also out of California. They make a reusable bag which is 100% biodegradable and made 100% in the USA. They have various options and you do not have to worry what happens when the bags someday end up in landfills etc. As for the doggy poop. We have two dogs (4-cats, a hairless Rat and a Guinea Pig ;-) and we also have to pick up after them. Fortunately, we found a biodegradable Doggy Poop Bag (http://www.poopbags.com/) which makes our mom happy (not about picking up after the dogs) because we know we are making a difference. Finally, as to the convenience issue you mentioned. Yes we have all been trained to be lazy and therefore change is difficult. Being lazy has allowed us to get in this mess to start with, it is our jobs as Gods Stewards of our planet, to make an effort to undo what we have created. It is not going to be easy but it can be done. look at what whole countries such as Italy have done. They outright banned single use plastic bags completely... and they survived. I know we can too. In the meantime, thanks for your great comments and for the suggestion to post something on our website which will help answer some of the questions you sent us. We will work on creating such a post and we will make sure to add it to this site as well. Thanks so much for caring and we hope you will stay tuned to see what we are doing next. Best regards from the entire OMG Team ;-)

I am really impressed with these initiatives you have taken on Carter and Olivia. We're in an environmental mess now, but it's your generation with kids like you that can make a difference. The "say no to plastic bags" is a great coalition. It should be emphasized everywhere. I live in NYC and I think there are more people here than in other areas that say no to plastic, but it's still an issue. Maybe it would be a great idea to post a blurb on alternatives to plastic bags. For instance, if we forget our bags what do you suggest. Or, I have a dog - what should I be using to pick up her #2 :) instead of plastic bags? It's an unfortunate truth that people are all about convenience - so if you make it impossible for them to say it's too bothersome to not use what they are given (plastic) it'll make your venture that much more successful. There are also new plastics that are biodegradable - are you skeptical?
