Portland Oregon can't get enough of festivals that combine green, music, bikes and, whenever possible, beer. A couple weeks ago it was New Belgium Brewery’s Tour de Fat with its now legendary group bike ride and car-for-bike trade-in; September 11-13 is Muddy Boot featuring a keynote address by 350.org Change Agent Bill McKibben and lots of great bands; then September 19 is Hopworks Urban Brewery’s BIKETOBEERFEST (a car free event). I <3 this trend!
A good friend of mine started a community organization that pools resources for food service and preservation. The group, called the North Portland Preserve and Serve Library, loans canners, food dehydrators, and juicers for food processing and place settings for large parties. This helps the community reduce the number of disposable plates, forks, and cups they use, while encouraging people to preserve their farm market produce scores. Very Portland!
Bamboo Sushi in Portland is the perfect marriage of two of my favorite things: Sushi and Sustainability. The first certified, sustainable sushi restaurant in the world, Bamboo serves delectable sushi while maintaining the greatest consciousness to marine stewardship, sustainability and the environment. Seriously. Does it get any better than THAT?
Well it seems that Portland is quite Green. Tennessee know how to go green as well. The Harpeth River Watershed Association is located in Franklin Tennessee. It is a great organization that is dedicated to preserving and restoring the ecological health of the Harpeth River and its watershed. Its membership is diverse with contributions from city officials and business professionals to scientists and farmers. Save the Rivers!! :)
One of the employees of the Tailwind jungle lodge (Mexico) shimmied up a palm tree to snap this shot of one of Tailwind's bungalows. This bungalow, called bungalow Parrota is a canvas safari tent on a platform of local hardwood. This photo, taken in the dimming light of dusk brings out the beautiful colors of the wood.
Nashville public and private schools are going green, including utilizing geothermal systems and instituting recycling and energy efficiency programs. More info: http://www.tennessean.com/article/20090907/MICRO020201/909090301/1475/Nashville+schools+adopt+eco-friendly+lifestyle
Green construction is becoming commonplace in Portland - everything from LEED certified construction to recycling "gently used" materials. The ReBuilding Center - just a block from my house - carries the region’s largest volume of used building and remodeling materials. It is really awesome and THE go-to place for those in the know.
Walton Mountain Virginia- Instead of driving we went walking and found this beautiful old church that had a vertical garden growing on all sides of it. Words to desribe: castle like roof with bell, green growth.

Looks like Portland is the Spot Green spot to beat! As a founder of Changents I’m not eligible to win the Timberland Earthkeepers boots, but at least I can have the fun of playing along. Tamarack House is in a cool Portland neighborhood called Ladd’s Addition. This corner property is a working laboratory for sustainable living. ANYONE is welcome to walk into the yard and check out the ways in which the 3 Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle – are being put into action from the recycled cedar telephone pole front porch to the bio-diesel furnace to the rain water collection barrels. They’ve even posted a map out front so you can see exactly what is going on – then apply what you learn at your own house.
