This week has been one of apprehension, anxiety and reality. I have lived in the gulf coast for well over a year now and it is only this week that I am starting to feel the tension of hurricane season. Last year was mild, only heavy rains. My life has been incredibly exciting lately with the planning of a 2,000 volunteer project in the midst, but with the potential of Gustav the climate is thickening. I don't know how to feel. Part of me is fearful, another doubtful as the media hypes everything from half tied shoelaces to spilt milk. I just got home from shopping: water, granola, batteries, baby wipes, yes baby wipes for a 24 yr old man, and canned food; the result of which I hope to be full cupboards and baby wipes I will never use. I write this for no other reason than I hate to talk storm to my neighbors as they have lived it, suffered from it and are lucky to tell the stories. I now have the slightest glimpse into ebb and flow of the tension and emotion of this city durring "the season". We should know more each day as Gustav moves about. Think good thoughts changents, homeowners and volunteers have fought too hard to undue the work of the past 3 years. Keep the Gulf in your thoughts.
