We make as many changes as we can in our daily lives to ease our burden on the planet. Our changes are both small and large. We have been posting our video stories and interviews about topics around sustainabilityon Current TV. There, you will find our story on Earthships, solar energy and electric cars. Two years ago we bought one of the few Ford Ranger electric pickup trucks that were saved from being crushed. For that story please see the movie “who killed the electric car?” Our other car is a Ford Escape hybrid which we have plans to convert to a plug in hybrid when the company Hymotion makes their conversion kit available for it. We pulled out out old water heater and hot air furnace and installed three thermal solar panels,an 80 gallon tank and on demand gas fired hot water heater. The majority of our heat and domestic hot water (including hot tub) is solar. The On Demand water heater fires up on those less sunny days and that is VERY rare here in New Mexico. We are currently installing a 5kW grid tied photovoltaic system on our roof which should cover all of our electric needs. This includes charging the electric truck. We changed our everyday us desktop computer to the ZONBU. This is a “thin client” based computer that runs on only 10w. Most computers run on around 250w. We shut off phantom power whenever we can by plugging TVs and such into power strips. We changed all light bulbs to CFLs. We compost kitchen scraps. We collect water from our roof into stackable rain barrels, made by Arid Sollutions , all around the house as well as gray water from our washing machine. We loan money through the micro-lending organization called KIVA to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world.
