Leave the Car at Home People!

I propose a pedestrian-orientated “citizen’s passport” to make walking, biking, and other forms of alternative transportation more fun, educational, and rewarding. Local street-level businesses and institutions would be integrated as partners in the passport program and help to fund it.

Well, the Pedestrian Passport did not make it to the Down:2:Earth finals.  Four other promising projects did, and I with them luck.  In terms of transportation, neither pedestrian-oriented project was selected - this one or Car-Free day.  But Boston continues to be a magnet for pedestrians, and there is much promise of improvements: Car-free wee... This project sounds interesting. Not only benefit to business, people might get a lot of benefits such as times and money from this too. I am looking forward to hearing more about this project. Great idea! Living in Boston for more than 15 years, but haven't know how to get around the city much. Thanks for posting this idea.

Sounds like a movement in the making... one potential added benefit would be an interactive component so that participants with "high" passport stamps could report back which neighborhoods were most easily navigated by foot/transit/bike; which ones had ridiculous/perilous facilities (ie. Longfellow Bridge for pedestrians; Mass Ave for bikers); where was disabled access easy/difficult; how long participants had to wait for bus/T to arrive, and include additional relevant details. for the feedback. Feedback contributors could be eligible for prizes based on the quality of their submissions and an additional random drawing... Feedback and locations could be gathered on a shared map and reached by mobile pda units (iphone/blackberry application)/computers/etc.

I think this could help alot, maybe a good system of moving up on a pedestrian hierarchy will be a reward in itself and an inspiration to the public, like people will be asking each other "WHAT PEDESTRIAN LEVEL R U?"

Great idea and would love to see it implemented ASAP. It would be great to have a list of participating businesses on a web site for them to create simple profile pages and update store events/promotions. People can then subscribe to RSS feeds on neighborhood pages to get the latest update. As a passport holder I would also appreciate a trip planner feature on the web page coupled to the MBTA bus and T schedule.
