In the late 1980's, I remember turning on the evening news and a multitude of African men, women and children filled the screen. They had been walking for months in an effort to escape civil war and famine. The most compelling images were those of the children who due to a lack of food, water and disease had deteriorated to the point that they could no longer walk or stand. Thinking that there was nothing I could do to help them, I said a prayer on their behalf with hopes that someone else would come to their rescue. I had no way of knowing at the time, that quite possibly, some of the very children on my television screen would one day call me mom and I would love them as my very own. See more in Joan's bio.
