If you were a Teen...

What environmental topics would you want to learn about? I am working this summer at an ecology camp, working with teens in a city-based reservation. We've already got a lot of great topics, from tree maintenance, to energy efficiency, clean energy, plants and wildlife, water quality, and the green economy. I have been brainstorming other ideas like environmental justice, toxins, public health, environmental policy planning... these are the topics I am most familiar with, so it would be great to get out my "comfort zone" and get some suggestions.

Any thoughts?

You sort of covered this in "toxins" but what about a make-up, shampoo, conditioner, etc topic that has to do with the chemicals in these things? A lot of them have been found to be not-so-great for us or the environment, and when they end up in the trash the toxins end up in the water supply, meaning big uh ohs. Just a thought!

Some ideas I had thinking about teens and the city of Boston...1) The MBTA --> buses vs. T vs. commuter rail vs. cars --> which one is better? 2) How much waste does a large public sporting event at Fenway, the Garden, and Foxboro create? 3) Cell phones --> where do they come from, what are they made of, and what happens when you throw one away/flush it down the toilet/acquire six of them 4) Where does our food come from? Everyone loves food and food that is grown organically, locally, and sustainably is more delicious. 5) And maybe because they might feel like all of this is way bigger than them and out of their control, have them develop action plans for what they can do themselves at home, at school, and in their communities. Hope this helps! You're a total rock star. Can't wait to hear how it goes.
