The OneChild Project Mine, Mine, Mine

I was arrested by a song Carrie Underwood sang during the "Idol Gives Back" show several years ago. It's a cover of George Michael's "Praying For Time". It arrested me so that I blogged about it then. It has again been pushed to the front of my mind during the past couple of weeks as I have been working on things concerning OneC... Thank you and look forward to reading more about your work... I love the energy and drive you have for what you do. I have been amazed to learn how American families are struggling. povety does not just exist in the 3rd world. Thank you for teaching me something new today. I hope I can help network for you to raise money. I would love to help you develop a community garden or network for home gardens. Not sure if that is an idea that would work in your area but is a great way to diversify the nutrition you could offer your community.

tell you a bit more about myself as in "me" or the "organization"? If you're wanting to know more about "me" the person you can check out my personal blog at www.RippleInTheWater.org. As for more about The OneChild Project: What we actively do, week in and week out, is whatever is needed by the people we work with. We work directly with the counselors from our partner schools and organizations. The way we see it, those people are on the front lines and already have a foothold in the part of the community they're in. They have credibility and influence there already. Instead of trying to develop that for ourselves, we fuel their fire. They call us with a need for one of their families and we fill it. Food, clothing, shelter, furniture, whatever. Most of what we do is food and clothing for struggling families. Now that it's cold we do a lot of stuff in that direction as well: coats, blankets, heat. Depending on the week, we get half a dozen calls from counselors. The cost of living is going up every day so most of the calls are about food. After they pay their bills (if they can pay their bills), people don't have a lot of money left over. As it stands right now, we're able to purchase 10 days worth of food for a family of six for roughly $75. If they work it right or the family is smaller than six people it will last longer than that, obviously. We're proud to say that, to this point, we haven't turned down any request yet when someone has called and asked for help. There always seems to be money in the account or it comes in right after the request is made. At the end of 2009, we had less than $6 in our account and that's the way we like it. If we have money sitting around that means we aren't doing our job. The best way to contribute/support us? go to the website and hit the "donate" button. I can always find struggling people. I hope that answers some of your questions. Let me know if you have more... Eric Vardeman

Hello Fellow change Agent. I would love to know who wrote this profile. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself? I know you are advocating for your organization but I am learning (yes, the hard way) that we are the best advocates, even catalysts for our work. And thank you so much.. Yes, NEED does belong to us; both lthe ocal and global community at large but it is so easy to get lost in our own life drama even when one really doesn't need to exist. I believe your approach is really viable. Most people can't handle the concept of having to help 100, 1,000 or even more children or families but they can handle the concept of one at a time. Can you also tell us a bit more about exactly what your program is actively doing and how someone can contribute to support one child?
