Life on my grrandparent's farm is work, not the kind of wrk I do when I'm teaching but physical labor. It's good to be able to get out and listen to the sounds of nature. I watched 4 bucks cross the road into our woods yesterday and while walking through the forest picking up plastic bottles and the ever present plastic bags from Wal- Mart I ... A couple of articles on the same problem, this time at sea. The facts in the first one just made me speechless, the second one gives a little hope for the future: http://www.sailinganarchy.com/article.php?get=4062 http://www.sail-world.com/cruising/index.cfm?nid=44898&rid=11

A Strange Incident. Winn Dixie is a great store for the most part. I like it because it's quiet, close by and the employees are very friendly which is something many of the large chain stores seem to be lacking. So I went in to do my weekly shopping, armed with my cloth bags (which I remembered to take in with me), and I concluded my weekly shopping trip. As I was in the check out line and the cashier began to use plastic, I said my usual phrase, "please don't use those, they're bad for the environment and I've brought cloth bags." The cashier gave me THE LOOK, then said "well, then you're going to have to wait while I put a sold sticker on every item. My jaw hit the floor! Picking up said jaw, I asked, "why, when I have my own bags and they're so much better for the planet? By now I was getting THE LOOK from the customers in line. She replied "it's company policy. If we don't bag the groceries in OUR bags then we have to put a sticker on ever item." I must have looked like a bus hit me because she turned away and started to sticker each item with a big red oval Sold so that anyone could see as I made the 10 feet from the cash register to the door that I did, in fact, pay for my items. A pointless exercise since as soon as she stickered them, I bagged them in cloth. Needless to say, this, to me, is just another example of corporate insanity at it's best.

Wow. Here in Texas we have a chain called H.E.B and they make there own reusable bags. Even Walmart has them and Target.

Thank you for all that you are doing to reduce the use of plastic bags. I don't think that enough people are educated on the importance of reducing plastic in our landfills. Nor, do they understand how long it takes for these items to biodegrade. I live in a neighborhood where it is free to recycle, and it makes me sick to see that hardly anyone does. I too am an educator and will make it a point to follow your progression with my future students! Please everyone..........buy the cloth bags that are sold at your local grocery store. They are inexpensive, durable, & washable.
