  • Hi Jen, thanks for your question. It is a sustainable model because SAME Cafe gets 75% of it's operating costs from the donations and makes up the rest with grants and fundraisers. They have a very low overhead because they have 2 shifts of volunteers everyday plus other people who come in to perform odd jobs like sweeping. I was skeptical myself because I was wondering if people would take advantage but people don't and I think it has a lot to do with how wonderfully Libby and Brad run the place and connect with their customers.
  • Thanks for your comments Rachel and Jen! You mention very good points. NPR tries to make this a fun, non-political story, but it's difficult to talk about grass-fed vs. corn-fed beef without at least addressing the subsidies, animal cruelty and environmental issues.
