About Me

We met last semester when Nate was Sami’s star student in her Design for Social Entrepreneurship studio at RISD. Now, Nate is off building his Local401 project into a reality while Sami continues teaching and gets ready to pilot an eco-home redecorating show with inner-city teens. Designing away the world’s most “inconvenient” social and environmental problems is something we are both passionate about, signaling a paradigm shift in America that will place creative design at center stage as our most untapped renewable resource. We use design as a tool to facilitate change and sustain the triple bottom line.

My Recent Comments

  • Kettlebelly, I appreciate your comments and agree with most of what you said. Even if I were to live on the streets for 6 months, I still would not understand what it is like to be forced on to the streets through unfortunate circumstances. I made a point in the blog to say that "I was not pretending to be homeless, and I did not experience “homelessness”. When you wrote "We want real individuals to care for us, to value us, talk to us, deal with us." That is all I have been attempting to do from the beginning of this project, and it's through those conversations that have shaped this project into what is is today. The project is not about claiming to understand homelessness so I can teach others what it is like. It is about working directly with homeless individuals to design and produce a product that address a need in the community; ideally creating job opportunities. If you have a chance take a look at some of my other posts, I welcome all feedback, good or bad, on the design of the pack, or the whole idea itself. Stay Safe and I wish you the best of luck, Nate
  • Thanks Nick...I just completed one prototype of this version of the pack. (Photos coming soon!) I plan to have 5 to 10 prototypes by the end of the month for field testing. I was initially thinking Providence area only so I could get feedback in person, and observe the performance of the Packs. But now that you mention it, I really like the idea of testing in different cities and countries! The trick will be finding the best way to communicate user feedback. Best, Nate
  • stvngrieve, I appreciate your support. Currently, I am in the process of creating more packs for testing and feedback, so the more feedback I get the better the product will be. What is the best way for me to contact you? -Nate
